Cat5 Keyboard Video Mouse switch (KVM)

The Keyboard Video Mouse switch (KMV) provides a central administration point for

a number of servers with graphics capability. “Cat5” refers to the cabling structure

used by the KVM.

Applications.

Any server with graphic capability can be administered from a single monitor,

keyboard and mouse Console with full graphics access, greatly reducing the realestate

taken up by conventional monitor, keyboard and mouse configurations.

Hardware Features.

The KVM has either 8, 16 or 32 ports for direct connections to the servers and each

port supports either: DVI+USB, VGA+USB or VGA+PS2 monitor, keyboard and mouse

connection.

The administration Console is VGA+USB monitor, keyboard and mouse connection

using the Console’s own cables to connect directly into the KVM, eliminating the

need for specific cables for the Console.

Each of the connected servers can be up to 40 meters from the KMV using industry

standard Cat5 cabling, eliminating the need for all of the servers to be in the one

rack.

Easy to Deploy and Use.

The KVM comes complete with a rackmounting kit and User Guide. For a simple

installation deployment takes less than thirty minutes.

Expandability.

The first, or “Master”, KVM can be cascaded to control further KVMs, expanding the

number of servers that can be administered by the one Console to 256 using 32 port

KVMs.

The Master KVM’s cascade port is connected to the next KMV’s Console VGA port in

the chain by a Cascade cable which is 1.8 meters in length. Each successive KVM is

connected to the previous one in the same manner

Management.

Set up of the KVM is through On-Screen menus from the Console monitor, keyboard

and mouse. Selection of the active server is either through front panel buttons, On-

Screen Display (OSD) menu or “Hot-keys”

Security

The Cat5 KVM has password protection and up to 8 user profiles for additional

security to that provided by the servers.

Console Cables

The Cat5 KVM has VGA and USB ports to accept the Console’s monitor, keyboard

and mouse cables. No additional cables are needed to connect the Console.

Server Cables

Connection to either DVI+USB, VGA+USB or VGA+PS2 monitor, keyboard and

mouse ports on the servers for maximum flexibility. The cables can be up to 40

meters in length and are standard Cat5 UTP cables. Connection to the server is

through UTP to DVI/USB, UTP to VGA/USB or UTP to VGA/PS2 adapters. One

adapter is needed for each server to be administered from the KVM.
