Benefits of Cisco Networking Switches

A Cisco network switch connects your IT infrastructure through a single, consistent operating system. Catalyst 9000 switches can be managed on-premises via Cisco Catalyst Center, or from the cloud via the Meraki dashboard, with no need to change the underlying hardware. The Catalyst 9300 series supports StackWise technology, allowing up to 8 switches to be stacked into a single unit, managed from a single IP address. This makes it straightforward to scale access-layer port density without adding management complexity.

Cisco offers two distinct switch families suited to different parts of the network. The Catalyst 9000 Series is Cisco's campus and enterprise switching family. The Nexus 9000 Series is Cisco's data centre switching family. As with the wider Cisco portfolio, all Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching and routing features are included out of the box on perpetual Network Essentials and Network Advantage licences.

Why Choose Refurbished Cisco Networking Switches from ITinStock?

At ITinStock, we are happy to discuss any bespoke configurations for your Cisco networking setup, whether that's a specific port count, PoE budget, uplink speed, or stacking configuration. Each of our refurbished Cisco switches undergoes rigorous testing, in which all ports are verified for connectivity and throughput, firmware is checked and updated where required, and each unit is reset to factory defaults before dispatch. We can deliver quickly to the UK and worldwide using our courier partners. Our expert support team are on hand to help with any pre-sales questions and compatibility queries you may have.

Complement Your Cisco Network Setup

Maximise your networking investment with these complementary IT components:

  • Cisco Servers Cisco Catalyst and Nexus switches integrate natively with Cisco UCS server management, making them a natural pairing with Cisco rack servers.
  • Network Transceivers Take a look at compatible SFP, SFP+, QSFP+, and QSFP28 transceivers and DAC cables for connectivity at 1GbE, 10GbE, 25GbE, 40GbE, and 100GbE.
  • UPS Systems Protect your network investment with an Uninterruptible Power Supply to ensure continuous connectivity during power disruptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Cisco networking switch series do you stock?

Our refurbished Cisco switch range spans the full Catalyst 9000 portfolio and legacy Catalyst range, as well as Nexus data centre switches. The Catalyst 9200 series covers entry-level access switching for SMB and branch office environments. The Catalyst 9300 series is Cisco's lead stackable enterprise access platform, with 24 or 48-port models supporting PoE+, UPOE, multigigabit ports, and StackWise stacking of up to 8 units. The modular Catalyst 9400 and fixed Catalyst 9500 series cover campus aggregation, core, and data centre access roles at up to 100GbE. The Nexus 9000 series covers top-of-rack, spine, and leaf data centre switching from 1GbE to 400GbE. We also stock legacy Cisco Catalyst switches, including the 2960, 3750, and 3850 series, for businesses expanding or maintaining existing Cisco infrastructure. If you need a specific model not currently listed, contact our team and we will check availability.

What is the difference between Cisco Catalyst and Nexus switches?

The Catalyst and Nexus series are designed for different parts of the network and run different operating systems. The Catalyst range is Cisco's campus and enterprise switching family, running Cisco IOS-XE. It is optimised for access-layer and aggregation deployments where PoE, user device connectivity, and simplified stacked management are the priority. Catalyst switches support StackWise for multi-unit stacking under a single management IP. The Nexus range is Cisco's data centre switching family, running NX-OS. It is optimised for top-of-rack server and storage connectivity, spine-leaf fabrics, and high-throughput environments. Nexus switches support virtual Port Channel (vPC) for active-active dual-switch uplinks, VXLAN and EVPN for software-defined networking overlays, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) on select models. As a general guide: if you are networking end users, phones, and access points, Catalyst is the right family; if you are networking servers, storage, and building data centre fabrics, Nexus is the right choice.

Which Cisco switches support stacking, and how many units can be stacked?

Cisco StackWise stacking is supported on the Catalyst 9200, 9300, and legacy 3750, 3850, and 2960-X series switches. The Catalyst 9300 supports StackWise-480, allowing up to 8 switches to be combined into a single logical switch with 480 Gbps of stacking bandwidth. The Catalyst 9300X models support StackWise-1T, providing up to 1 Tbps of stacking bandwidth in an 8-unit stack. The Catalyst 9200 supports StackWise-160, providing up to 160 Gbps across up to 8 units. When switches are stacked, they operate as a single logical device with one management IP address, one configuration, and one control plane, making it simple to scale port density across a floor or building without adding management overhead. It is important to note that stacking is only supported within the same series and compatible StackWise generation. For example, Catalyst 9300 and 9300X models can be mixed in the same stack, but legacy 3850 switches cannot be stacked with 9300 switches.

Which Cisco switches support Power over Ethernet (PoE), and how much power do they provide?

PoE support is available across a wide range of Catalyst access switches. The Catalyst 9200 series supports standard PoE+ at up to 30W per port, suited to IP phones, standard access points, and basic IoT endpoints. The Catalyst 9300 series extends this with three power tiers: PoE+ at 30W per port, UPOE (Universal PoE) at 60W per port for high-power devices such as Wi-Fi 6 access points and multi-directional PTZ cameras, and UPOE+ at 90W per port on select 9300X models for devices such as LED lighting systems and advanced video collaboration endpoints. Total PoE power budget per switch varies by model and installed power supplies, with up to 822W available on a 48-port Catalyst 9300. Cisco StackPower, available on Catalyst 9300 stacks, allows PoE power budgets to be pooled and shared across stacked switches, giving greater flexibility when powering high-density PoE deployments. Our team at ITinStock can help identify the right model for your PoE requirements.
