The Importance of Rails & Rack Mount Kits

Rails for rack-mounted servers are crucial for housing your servers safely. Not only do rack rails help with the organisation of these servers in a server rack or cabinet, but they help the airflow of your rackmount servers to keep them cool and operating smoothly.

Beyond just holding servers in place, server rails are the unsung heroes of the server room, supporting the weight of valuable hardware and allowing for smooth installation.

Most of all, server rails help with the maintenance of your rack servers. That’s because they slot onto the sides of your servers and enable them to be easily slotted into, and from, your server racks. Should there be any issue with your server, that means the attached server rails allow easy access to the server for repair, modification or removal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a server rail kit and what does it do?

A server rail kit is a pair of metal brackets or frames that mount and secure a server inside a rack or cabinet. They ensure that you can organise, access, and secure your servers, and because they provide stability and support, they allow for efficient installation, maintenance, and management of your systems. Rack rail kits come in different types depending on your needs: sliding rails let you pull a server out like a drawer for servicing without disconnecting cables, while fixed (static) rails hold the server firmly in place for a more secure, cost-effective setup.

Are refurbished rail kits reliable, and will they work the same as new OEM rails?

Yes. Refurbished rail kits sourced from reputable suppliers are tested and certified to ensure they function correctly and meet the same fit and performance standards as the original equipment. Our professionally refurbished rail kits are tested, certified, and come with a warranty, giving you confidence that they'll perform as expected. Choosing refurbished is also a cost-effective and sustainable alternative, which is particularly useful when OEM rails for older server generations are discontinued or carry a significant new-purchase premium. At ITinStock, all rail kits are inspected before sale to ensure compatibility and reliability.

What's the difference between sliding rails and fixed (static) rails?

Chances are, you’re looking at whether sliding rails or fixed rails are better for you. The choice comes down to how often you need to access your servers. Sliding rails allow you to fully extend your server out of the rack for convenient access without having to remove it, whereas static rails are fixed in place and means the server must be removed from the rack entirely for any servicing. Fixed rails lock the server securely in place, reducing movement and vibration, and their simpler design means fewer components wear over time and makes them a popular choice in large data centres where cost-efficiency is prioritised. For environments where servers need regular maintenance or where space is limited, sliding rails are typically preferred.

What do I need to check to make sure a rail kit fits my rack?

There are three key things to verify: rack type, hole type, and mounting depth. If you have a two-post rack, you can only use a two-post rail kit. For hole type, most rail kits on the market are designed for non-threaded, square hole racks… which means if your rack has threaded holes, square-hole rails will not work. Finally, mounting depth (the distance between the front and rear mounting posts) must fall within the adjustment range of your chosen rail kit. Data centre managers must consider the width and depth of the rack, the placement and type of mounting holes, and the weight of the equipment before selecting rails.
