Benefits of Brocade Networking Switches

Brocade network switches come in two specific model series to help your business.

The ICX Series runs Brocade’s FastIron operating system and is useful for campus, enterprise and branch access switching. This series covers the ICX 6430, 6450, 6610, 6650, 7250, 7450, and 7750 models, with models like the ICX 6450 and 6610 supporting high-availability stacking and instantaneous hitless failover. Other models, like the ICX 7750, can deliver a chassis-level experience in a 1U fixed form factor with 10/40GbE switching, using Distributed Chassis stacking technology for scale-out networking without the expense of a traditional modular chassis.

The VDX Series runs Brocade’s Network OS (NOS) and is useful for data centre environments that need Ethernet fabric technology. This series covers the VDX 6710, 6720, 6730, 6740, 6940, and modular VDX 8770. Based on VCS (Virtual Cluster Switching) Fabric technology, the VDX family of low-latency 10GbE switches supports multiple connectivity options from traditional IP to storage traffic, allowing Ethernet and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) traffic to flow across a single converged network. VCS Fabric technology distributes all configuration and destination information to every member switch in the fabric, eliminating single points of failure. Why Choose Refurbished Brocade Networking Switches from ITinStock?

At ITinStock, we are happy to discuss any bespoke configurations for your Brocade networking setup, whether that's a specific port count, uplink speed or airflow direction. Each of our refurbished Brocade switches undergoes rigorous testing, in which all ports are verified for connectivity and throughput, firmware is checked and updated where required, and each unit is reset to factory defaults before dispatch. We can then deliver quickly to the UK and worldwide. Our expert support team are on hand to help with any pre-sales questions, compatibility queries, and post-purchase support you may need.

Complement Your Brocade Network Setup

Maximise your networking investment with these complementary IT components:

  • Rack Servers Brocade ICX and VDX switches integrate with all major servers via open standards, meaning our full range of rack servers can pair with these switches.
  • Network Transceivers Take a look at compatible SFP, SFP+, QSFP+, and QSFP28 transceivers at 1GbE, 10GbE, 25GbE, 40GbE, and 100GbE speeds to connect your Brocade switches to the wider infrastructure.
  • UPS Systems Protect your network investment with an Uninterruptible Power Supply to ensure continuous connectivity during power disruptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Brocade networking switch series do you stock?

Our refurbished Brocade switch range spans both the ICX campus platform and the VDX data centre fabric platform. In the ICX campus range, the ICX 6430 and 6450 are compact, stackable Gigabit Ethernet access switches suited to small-to-medium enterprise and branch office deployments. The FCX Series delivers enterprise-class Layer 2/3 switching in a compact, stackable form factor, available in both stacking and non-stacking models with optional PoE+ and field-upgradeable 10GbE uplink modules. The ICX 6610 and 6650 provide higher-density aggregation switching with 10/40GbE uplinks, while the ICX 7250, 7450, and 7750 represent the 7000-generation platform with improved stacking bandwidth, multi-rate port options, and HyperEdge management. In the data centre range, the VDX 6710 through 6940 are fixed 1U and 2U ToR/EoR fabric switches, and the VDX 8770 is a modular chassis switch supporting single VCS Fabrics of over 8,000 switch ports and up to 384,000 connected VMs. If you need a specific model not currently listed, contact our team and we will check availability.

What is the difference between the Brocade ICX Series and VDX Series?

The ICX and VDX are fundamentally different products designed for different networking environments, and it is important not to conflate them. The ICX Series runs FastIron OS and is a traditional stackable switch platform designed for campus access, aggregation, and core switching. It supports PoE+, standard Layer 2/3 protocols, and IronStack stacking, and is the right choice for wiring closet and enterprise LAN deployments. The VDX Series runs Network OS and is designed specifically for data centre Ethernet fabric deployments using VCS Fabric technology, which is based on Data Centre Bridging and TRILL standards to eliminate Spanning Tree Protocol and enable a flat, intelligent, self-configuring fabric where all switches share configuration and routing information. VDX also supports Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), iSCSI, and NAS storage connectivity, making it suitable for converged IP and storage network environments that the ICX does not support. The two platforms use different operating systems, different management tools, and are not interchangeable.

How does Brocade ICX stacking work, and how many switches can be stacked?

Brocade's traditional stacking technology in the FastIron ICX family creates a group of physically connected switches that operate as a single logical chassis, simplifying management by reducing multiple physical devices to a single management point. Up to 12 Brocade ICX 7450 switches can be stacked using standards-based full-duplex 40GbE or 10GbE stacking ports, providing 960Gbps of aggregated stacking bandwidth with full redundancy, eliminating inter-switch bottlenecks. The ICX 6610 supports stacking of up to eight switches using 40GbE stacking ports, while the ICX 7250 supports up to 12 units. Stacking topology can be configured as a linear chain or a ring. In a ring topology, if any single stacking link fails, traffic automatically reroutes through the remaining links with no disruption to connected devices. However, all units in a traditional stack must be running the same software version, which should be verified before adding a refurbished switch to an existing stack. Our team can advise on firmware compatibility before you order.

Do Brocade VDX switches require a VCS licence to operate?

Not for all deployments. The VCS software licence is required for Ethernet fabrics of three or more switches but is not required for a pair of switches deployed in Top-of-Rack configurations in classic Ethernet environments. FCoE functionality requires a separate FCoE licence to activate. Importantly, VDX switches can also be placed in standalone mode to operate as standard Layer 2 Ethernet bridges without VCS Fabric enabled, making them usable in conventional network designs without any licence investment. VCS Fabric mode is on by default on VDX switches, so buyers deploying refurbished VDX units into a non-fabric environment should be aware that the switch will need to be placed into standalone mode during initial configuration. Our team can advise on the licence status of specific units and assist with initial configuration guidance where needed.

What warranty do you offer on refurbished networking equipment?

All refurbished networking equipment includes a 3-year warranty. Extended warranty options are available for organisations requiring longer coverage periods or enhanced support levels. Our warranty ensures you receive reliable, tested equipment with expert advice backing your investment. Warranty terms cover hardware failures and defects, which will be replaced wherever possible if our technicians cannot help diagnose and fix any hardware related issues you have throughout the coverage period.
