What is the difference between the Dell PowerEdge VRTX, FX2 and C6400 node enclosures?
The VRTX is designed for office environments and remote offices. It is available as a tower or 5U rack chassis, integrating up to four M-series server nodes and up to eight PCIe expansion slots, designed for environments without a dedicated data centre.

The FX2 and FX2s are purpose-built 2U rack platforms for converged, data centre-grade deployments, supporting FC-series and FM-series compute sleds with either pass-through or I/O aggregator networking modules.

The C6400 is the most compute-dense of the three: an ultra-dense 2U enclosure supporting up to four independent hot-swappable two-socket node sleds, targeting HPC, hyper-converged infrastructure and cloud workloads with the latest Intel and AMD processor families.

The compute sleds are designed for a specific enclosure type and cannot be moved between the three server types.

Do Dell node servers require a separate enclosure to operate?
Yes. Dell PowerEdge node servers and compute sleds cannot operate independently. They require a compatible chassis enclosure to provide power, cooling, networking and management infrastructure. It is important to verify sled-to-enclosure compatibility before purchasing, as no Dell node server is interchangeable with each other. What is the difference between a Dell node enclosure and a Dell blade enclosure?
Both blade and node server enclosures are a shared chassis that provides power, cooling and management for multiple compute modules… but the difference is in their form factor, target use case and the type of modules they accept. Dell's blade enclosures, such as the M1000e and MX7000, are traditional data centre platforms designed for high-density blade servers in 7U or 10U chassis configurations. Node enclosures, by contrast, tend to be more compact and versatile: the FX2 and C6400 fit within 2U, while the VRTX offers an office-appropriate tower form factor. Node enclosures also generally offer more integrated shared storage options (particularly the VRTX) and, in the case of the FX2s and VRTX, standard PCIe expansion slots that blade enclosures do not support. The compute sleds used in node enclosures and the blade servers used in blade enclosures are not interchangeable.

How do refurbished Dell node enclosures differ from new ones?
