The Importance of our Other Server Rails

No matter if it’s Extreme Network server rails, Brocade server rails, Juniper server rails or from another brand, these rails are crucial for housing rack mounted servers safely. Not only do rack rails help with the organisation of these servers in a server rack or cabinet, but they help the airflow of your rackmount servers to keep them cool and operating smoothly.

Beyond just holding servers in place, these other branded rails are the unsung heroes of the server room, supporting the weight of valuable hardware and allowing for smooth installation.

Most of all, server rails help with the maintenance of your rack servers. That’s because they slot onto the sides of your servers and enable them to be easily slotted into, and from, your server racks. Should there be any issue with your server, that means the attached server rails allow easy access to the server for repair, modification or removal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of rack mount kits are available for Brocade switches?

Brocade (under Broadcom) offers several distinct rack mounting options for its networking switches, and the correct choice depends on both the switch model and the type of rack being used.

Fixed rack mount kits use standard ear-mount brackets that attach the switch flush to the front of the rack, and are typically suited to lighter 1U switches such as the Brocade G610 or 300 series.

Slide rail kits allow the switch to slide out of the rack for easier servicing without requiring full removal, and are more common for deeper or heavier switches such as the VDX 6740 or G620.

Mid-mount kits are used primarily in two-post Telco racks. Instead of mounting at the front, the brackets attach to the middle of the switch chassis to better balance the weight across the two posts. For larger director-class chassis such as the X6 and X7 DCX, heavy-duty shelf-style rails are required to support the significant weight of the fully populated chassis.

All mounting kits support standard 19-inch EIA racks, with both round-hole and square-hole rack posts accommodated.

Are Brocade rack mount kits included with the switch, or ordered separately?

This varies by switch model and kit type. Some Brocade switches ship with a basic fixed-mount kit included in the box, while others are optional accessories that must be ordered separately. It is also worth noting that Brocade switch-specific rail kits should be used rather than generic third-party alternatives, as Brocade's own installation documentation for the 6510 explicitly warns "do not use standard rails to install the Brocade 6510 in a rack, they will not fit”, signalling that some Brocade switches have non-standard chassis widths that require purpose-built bracket kits.

What rack mounting options are available for Extreme Networks switches, and are they included?

Extreme Networks switches generally ship with a four-post rack mounting kit included in the box as standard. For example, the X465 Series ships with a four-post fixed rack-mounting kit (XN-46-RKMT-001), with the provided brackets adaptable to either a front-mount or mid-mount installation, and optional rear-mounting brackets included for four-post racks or cabinets.

However, two-post mounting kits are a consistent exception: brackets for a two-post mount are not included in the box with the switch and must be ordered separately, with dedicated two-post kit part numbers such as XN-2P-RKMT299 available for a range of Extreme switch models.

All Extreme Networks switches are designed for standard 19-inch EIA equipment racks, making them compatible with third-party rack brands.

Do Juniper Networks switches come with rack mount kits, and how do they work?

Rack mount kits are typically included with Juniper Networks EX and QFX switch families.

Juniper's EX-series switches ship with mounting brackets and screws to secure the chassis to rack or cabinet rails, while QFX-series switches such as the QFX5120, QFX5200 and QFX5210 include a model-specific four-post rack mount kit comprising front mounting rails and rear mounting blades that slide together to support the chassis at both ends.

Most Juniper switch mount kits support both square-hole and threaded-hole four-post 19-inch racks, with cage nuts and washers provided where required. Rack depth requirements vary by model.
