Yes, provided you select the correct shelf model for your FAS platform. NetApp DS2246 shelves connect via 6Gb SAS and are compatible with a wide range of FAS2000, FAS3000, and FAS6000 systems. The DS4246 supports 3.5” NL-SAS and SATA drives as well as mixed SSD/HDD Flash Pool configurations and connects using the same 6Gb SAS interface with IOM6 I/O modules. It is worth noting that SAS drives are only supported in the DS2246 and DS224C shelves, while SATA and NL-SAS drives are supported in the DS4246, DS4486, and DS460C. NetApp’s Hardware Universe tool is the most reliable way to verify compatibility for your specific controller and ONTAP release. How do EMC VNX Disk Array Enclosures (DAEs) connect to my VNX array?
EMC VNX DAEs connect to the VNX storage system via its back-end SAS buses. It is important to match the DAE model to your VNX controller generation: the V2-DAE series (15-bay 3.5” and 25-bay 2.5”) are compatible with VNX5100 and VNX5300, while the VNX6GSDAE25 (25-slot 2.5”), VNX6GSDAE15 (15-slot 3.5”), and VNX6GSDAE60 (60-slot 3.5”) are for VNX5500, VNX5700, and VNX7500. Mixing the wrong DAE generation with an incompatible array will prevent the shelf from being recognised.

Can a Synology expansion unit be managed through the same interface as my RackStation?
Yes. Synology RX1217, RX1217RP, and RX2417 SAS expansion units connect to a compatible Synology RackStation or FlashStation via a high-bandwidth expansion or miniSAS cable, and the drives in the expansion unit appear and behave as though they are internal drives of the host system. All management, volume creation, RAID configuration, and drive health monitoring is handled through the familiar Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) interface. The RAID volume on the RackStation can be expanded directly to include the new drives without reformatting existing drives, ensuring uninterrupted service during the expansion process. The expansion unit also powers on and off automatically with the attached RackStation.
