The Benefits of Dell Storage Enclosures

Whether you’re storing data for virtualisation environments, databases, backup and disaster recovery, media workflows, or general file serving, Dell storage options (such as for Dell PowerVault servers) are purpose-built to handle it.

Dell PowerVault arrays are designed specifically for Storage Area Network (SAN) and Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) systems, making them flexible for both SMEs and large-scale data centres.

What is the difference between the Dell PowerVault ME Series and MD Series?

The ME Series is Dell’s current-generation PowerVault platform, superseding the MD Series. ME arrays use a more modern active-active dual-controller architecture with a simplified HTML5 management interface, all-inclusive software licensing (with no additional feature keys required), and 12G SAS backend connectivity throughout. They support multi-protocol host connectivity from a single controller, and include ADAPT distributed RAID for faster drive rebuild times compared to traditional RAID. The MD Series is the legacy platform, offering comparable functionality in an established, mature architecture that remains a cost-effective choice for organisations already running MD-compatible infrastructure. The two series are not cross-compatible: MD expansion enclosures cannot be connected behind ME base arrays, and vice versa. If you’re unsure which series best fits your environment, our team is happy to advise.

Can Dell PowerVault storage enclosures be used as both DAS and SAN storage?

Yes. In a direct-attached storage (DAS) configuration, the array connects directly to one or more PowerEdge servers, making it a straightforward and cost-effective way to expand server storage capacity without network infrastructure. In a SAN configuration, the array connects to multiple servers simultaneously via Fibre Channel or iSCSI, enabling shared storage pools, centralised data management, and features such as live virtual machine migration. ME4 and ME5 dual-controller arrays in SAN mode support up to four servers in a fully redundant (HA) configuration, or up to eight servers in a non-HA configuration. This flexibility makes PowerVault enclosures a practical choice across a wide range of deployment scales.

What RAID levels do Dell PowerVault storage enclosures support?

Dell PowerVault ME and MD storage enclosures support a full range of RAID levels to balance performance, capacity, and data protection depending on the workload. These include RAID 0 (striping, maximum performance, no redundancy), RAID 1 and RAID 10 (mirroring, strong redundancy, suited to transactional databases), RAID 5 (single parity, good balance of performance and protection), and RAID 6 (dual parity, protects against simultaneous dual-drive failure, suited to large-capacity environments). ME Series arrays additionally offer ADAPT (Adaptive Data Protection Technology) which spreads data and parity across all drives in a pool rather than fixed groups. This significantly accelerates rebuild times after a drive failure compared to traditional RAID, reducing the window of data vulnerability and making ADAPT particularly well suited to high-capacity environments with large drives.

Can I expand a Dell PowerVault storage array as my capacity needs grow?

Yes. Expansion is a core design principle of the PowerVault platform. ME Series base arrays can be scaled by daisy-chaining ME Series expansion enclosures via 12G SAS, reaching up to 336 drives and 4PB of raw capacity per array. MD3 base arrays expand using MD1200 and MD1220 enclosures up to 120 drives, or up to 180 drives on MD3460-based systems using the MD3060e shelf. It is important to note that expansion enclosure compatibility is specific to the base array series: ME expansion enclosures must be used with ME base arrays, and MD expansion enclosures with MD base arrays, and certain models within each series have specific expansion pairing requirements. Our team can advise on the correct expansion path for your specific configuration.
